How can architects embrace activism, innovation, and collaboration to create more inclusive, sustainable, and empathetic environments?
On the 154th episode of Practice Disrupted, I had the pleasure of joining Evelyn Lee to discuss how architects can embrace activism, innovation, and collaboration to create more inclusive, sustainable, and empathetic environments. As an architect, strategist, and advocate for sustainability and inclusion, I identify as an ‘Archtivist,’ a term I created to describe architects and built environment professionals who lead environmental, social, and economic reform to foster positive societal changes.
During the episode, I explored the relationship between activism and architecture, highlighting how it challenges traditional practices and promotes innovation. I shared strategies for implementing collaboration and integrated solutions in practice to work towards more inclusive designs. One key aspect we discussed was the need to dismantle and challenge the idea of the ‘Reference Man’ in design. This outdated concept is exclusive and fails to represent the diverse identities and perspectives necessary to address today’s challenges.
Career paths are by no means linear—they’re squiggly and dynamic, much like life itself. So take some pressure off yourself a little.
Reflecting on my journey, I shared how my nomadic childhood shaped my perspective on empathy and cultural awareness in architectural practice. Additionally, becoming a new mother to twins has deepened my commitment to creating a better future through my work. I related the process of training my twins to sleep through the night to how architects can actively participate in addressing built environment issues by changing their mindset and using their agency, even when feeling powerless.
Career paths are by no means linear—they’re squiggly and dynamic, much like life itself. So take some pressure off yourself a little. This realization helped me shift away from the traditional architecture career I envisioned towards Archtivism, aligning with my purpose-driven nature. Being my authentic self, building community both online and offline, and challenging the status quo have been crucial parts of this process.
